Virginia Tech Enters ACC Play Undefeated
Virginia Tech has a chance to start the James Franklin era with a 4-0 record when the Hokies travel to Boston College on Saturday.
Virginia Tech is 3-0 after opening the season with wins over VMI, Old Dominion and Maryland. The biggest victory came last week, when the Hokies defeated Maryland 35-26 on the road. It was Virginia Tech’s first victory over a Power Four nonconference opponent since 2017.
Now the Hokies turn their attention to their first ACC game of the season.
Grunkemeyer Has Been Outstanding
One of the biggest reasons for Virginia Tech’s hot start has been quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer.
Through three games, Grunkemeyer has thrown for 865 yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions while completing 78.2% of his passes. He has also thrown for at least 300 yards in consecutive games.
Against Maryland, Grunkemeyer completed 31 of 39 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns without turning the ball over.
His connection with tight end Luke Reynolds has also become a major part of the offense. Reynolds enters the game with 25 catches for 265 yards and four touchdowns.
Virginia Tech is averaging 50.7 points and 493.3 total yards per game, putting the Hokies among the nation’s most productive offenses early in the season.
Boston College Looks to Pull the Upset
Boston College enters the matchup at 2-1 after defeating Maine 22-16 last weekend.
The Eagles have struggled to consistently move the ball, averaging 383 total yards and just 21.7 points per game. Quarterback Mason McKenzie has thrown for 648 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions through three games.
That could create a major challenge against a Virginia Tech defense that has been particularly strong against the run.
The Hokies are allowing just 61 rushing yards per game, which ranks seventh nationally. Boston College will need to find ways to keep the Virginia Tech defense from dominating the line of scrimmage and forcing McKenzie into difficult passing situations.
Can The Hokies Start 4-0?
This game represents an important early opportunity for Virginia Tech.
A 4-0 start would give Franklin and the Hokies plenty of momentum heading into the heart of ACC play. Virginia Tech has already proven it can win on the road after beating Maryland, but Boston College presents a different challenge with the game taking place at Alumni Stadium.
The Hokies also have history on their side. Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 22-11 and won the most recent meeting 42-21 in 2024.
Still, Boston College cannot be overlooked.
If Grunkemeyer continues playing efficiently, the Hokies protect the football and their defense keeps controlling the run, Virginia Tech will have a strong opportunity to leave Chestnut Hill with its fourth straight victory.
The next step for the Hokies is simple: start ACC play with a win and keep the undefeated season alive.
