The Carolina Panthers are making changes to their coaching staff, bringing back a familiar face to help stabilize their struggling defense. Carolina has hired former NFL star DeAngelo Hall as its new cornerbacks coach, giving the team an experienced defensive mind as it looks to turn its season around.

The move comes after the Panthers fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley following a disappointing 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers. With defensive line coach Todd Wash stepping in as interim defensive coordinator, Hall’s arrival gives Carolina another experienced coach to help guide its secondary.

Hall Returns to Carolina

Hall is no stranger to the Panthers organization. He previously served as Carolina’s assistant defensive backs coach in 2023 and 2024 before departing in January 2025 to pursue an opportunity as a primary position coach.

Now, he returns to take over the cornerbacks group for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Hall brings plenty of experience to the position after spending 14 seasons in the NFL. He played for the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders and Washington franchise, earning three Pro Bowl selections during his career.

He finished his playing career with 43 interceptions and holds the NFL record for the most career fumble-return yards, with 328. His accomplishments on the field give him valuable experience to share with Carolina’s defensive backs.

Can Hall Help Turn Things Around?

Carolina’s defensive coaching changes come at a difficult point in the season. The Panthers need more consistency on defense, and Hall will have an important responsibility in helping the cornerbacks improve their performance.

His familiarity with the organization should help him settle into the role quickly. Having previously worked with the coaching staff, Hall understands the team’s environment and what is expected of its defensive players.

The Panthers have 10 games remaining in the regular season, giving Hall an opportunity to make an immediate impact.

Although one coaching hire will not solve every problem, Carolina is hoping Hall’s experience and knowledge of the position can help strengthen its secondary.

For the Panthers, bringing Hall back represents an important step toward stabilizing the defense and finishing the season stronger.
