The Baltimore Ravens are dealing with a quarterback situation that nobody could have expected entering the 2026 season. After suffering another disappointing loss, Baltimore suddenly finds itself facing the possibility of having to turn to an undrafted rookie to lead its offense.
The trouble began Sunday against the Buffalo Bills when Lamar Jackson suffered a right thumb injury on Baltimore’s opening offensive play. The injury was serious enough to require surgery, and Jackson is expected to be placed on injured reserve. Head coach Jesse Minter acknowledged that the injury could potentially end Jackson’s season.
Jackson had only just returned after missing three games with an ankle injury. His return was supposed to provide a major boost to an offense that struggled without him. Instead, he lasted just one play before heading to the locker room.
Tyler Huntley Also Goes Down
Things somehow got worse for Baltimore when backup quarterback Tyler Huntley suffered a toe injury during the second quarter.
Huntley had already started three games while Jackson was sidelined, but now his availability for Thursday’s matchup is uncertain.
That forced the Ravens to turn to undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, who made his NFL debut against Buffalo. Fagnano finished with 91 passing yards, an interception and a lost fumble as Baltimore suffered a 36-10 defeat.
Although Fagnano showed some flashes during the game, asking an inexperienced rookie to suddenly lead an NFL offense is a massive challenge.
Baltimore’s Season Is Suddenly in Danger
The Ravens are now 4-4 after losing three consecutive games, and their quarterback situation could not come at a worse time.
Baltimore has a short week before hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. The coaching staff must determine whether Huntley can return, whether Fagnano is healthy enough to start or whether another quarterback needs to be brought into the organization.
The loss of Jackson is particularly devastating because of everything he brings to the offense. His passing ability, athleticism and playmaking make him one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in football.
The Ravens entered the season with championship expectations, but those hopes are suddenly looking much harder to achieve.
