The penalty stemmed from an incident in which DeChambeau’s ball moved after he addressed it. The decision dropped him further down the leaderboard and effectively ended any realistic hopes of making a late charge.
While some players questioned whether the punishment fit the situation, Rory McIlroy had little doubt the officials reached the correct conclusion.

For DeChambeau, the ruling became one of the defining moments of his championship. For McIlroy, it was simply a matter of enforcing the game’s standards, while Homa reminded fans that penalties do not automatically call a player’s integrity into question.
