Rory McIlroy has never been shy about sharing his opinions, but his recent comments about Bryson DeChambeau have sparked accusations of hypocrisy.
Speaking about DeChambeau, McIlroy said, “I’m not particularly fond of him,” adding that he believes “a lot of it’s performative” and “for attention.” Those remarks quickly spread across social media and reignited one of golf’s longest-running rivalries.
The criticism also prompted fans to revisit McIlroy’s own public behavior.
One widely shared video shows McIlroy walking over to a spectator who was recording him, taking the fan’s phone and walking away before later returning it. The incident generated significant discussion at the time, with some defending McIlroy’s frustration while others argued professional athletes should expect to be filmed during public tournament weeks.
For critics, that’s where the contradiction lies.
McIlroy has often positioned himself as one of golf’s most outspoken voices, commenting on everything from LIV Golf to fellow players and the direction of the sport. Yet when attention turns toward him, critics argue he has not always reacted with the same level of composure he expects from others.
Supporters would counter that the two situations are different. Criticizing a competitor’s public persona is not the same as dealing with intrusive fans or unwanted interactions during competition. Professional golfers routinely face distractions that can affect performance.
Still, perception matters.
Calling another player “performative” naturally invites scrutiny of your own conduct. For many fans, the resurfaced phone incident made McIlroy’s comments toward DeChambeau feel ironic, even if the circumstances were unrelated.
Whether you agree with McIlroy or not, the episode highlights a simple reality in modern sports: athletes who openly criticize others should expect their own actions to receive the same level of public examination.
McIlroy remains one of golf’s biggest stars and one of its most accomplished players. But after taking a public shot at DeChambeau, many fans have been quick to argue that he, too, has had moments that don’t align with the image he projects. In the court of public opinion, that’s why accusations of hypocrisy have resurfaced.
