Bruins Pull Off Major Victory in Eugene
The No. 21 UCLA Bruins delivered one of the biggest surprises of the college football season Saturday, defeating No. 13 Oregon 17-15 at Autzen Stadium. UCLA’s defense came up with a crucial stop on a late two-point conversion attempt, allowing the Bruins to escape with a victory and extend their undefeated start.
Head coach DeShaun Foster’s team improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play, snapping an eight-game losing streak at Oregon’s home stadium. Meanwhile, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning watched his team fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play after struggling with turnovers throughout the afternoon.
Wayne Knight Leads UCLA’s Offense
Running back Wayne Knight was the standout performer for UCLA, finishing with 103 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding another score through the air. His explosive running helped the Bruins build a lead against an Oregon defense that struggled to contain him.
UCLA opened the scoring with a 21 yard field goal from Mateen Bhaghani. Oregon briefly moved in front after quarterback Dylan Raiola lost a fumble deep in UCLA territory, setting up a one-yard touchdown run by Jordon Davison.
The Bruins responded when Knight broke free for a 35 yard touchdown run, giving UCLA a 10-6 advantage in the second quarter. The teams traded defensive stops through the remainder of the first half, with UCLA protecting its lead.
Quarterback Injury Changes the Game
UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava completed 10 of 17 passes for 162 yards but committed three turnovers, including two interceptions and a lost fumble. He also appeared to suffer a leg injury late in the first half and did not return after halftime.
Backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach stepped in and helped UCLA extend its advantage. In the fourth quarter, Dieffenbach connected with Knight for a nine-yard touchdown, pushing the Bruins ahead 17-6 and giving them a valuable cushion.
The touchdown proved critical as Oregon began mounting a late comeback.
Oregon’s Rally Falls Short
Oregon struggled to establish offensive consistency, repeatedly giving away possession and allowing UCLA to control the pace. The Ducks finished with five lost fumbles, a costly total that prevented them from building sustained momentum.
Kicker Gage Hurych connected on a 26 yard field goal to cut UCLA’s lead to 17-9. Quarterback Brock Thomas then connected with Evan Stewart on a 44-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes remaining, bringing Oregon within two points.
Rather than settle for an extra point and remain behind, Oregon attempted a two-point conversion to tie the game. UCLA’s defense stood firm, stopping the attempt and preserving the 17-15 lead.
The Ducks had one final opportunity to recover the ball, but UCLA held on to secure the upset.
A Statement Win for the Bruins
The victory gives Foster and UCLA a significant boost as they continue their Big Ten campaign. The Bruins overcame quarterback uncertainty and a difficult road environment by relying on Knight’s production and a defense that repeatedly forced turnovers.
For Lanning and Oregon, the defeat highlights the importance of ball security. The Ducks had opportunities to win but could not overcome their mistakes.
UCLA leaves Eugene undefeated after a gritty performance, while Oregon must regroup after a frustrating home loss.
