Buckeyes Pull Away for Convincing Victory

The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes delivered another impressive performance Saturday, defeating Maryland 45-16 at Ohio Stadium. Quarterback Julian Sayin threw four touchdown passes, while star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith scored twice as Ohio State pulled away for a comfortable Big Ten victory.

Head coach Ryan Day watched his team improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Maryland head coach Michael Locksley, meanwhile, saw the Terrapins fall to 2-4 after struggling to keep pace with Ohio State’s explosive offense.

Although the Buckeyes made several mistakes early, their talent eventually took over. Ohio State entered halftime with a 31-10 advantage and continued controlling the game after the break.

Julian Sayin Leads the Offense

Sayin directed an efficient passing attack, throwing four touchdown passes while finishing with 242 passing yards. The sophomore quarterback connected with multiple targets, helping Ohio State take advantage of Maryland’s defensive struggles.

Smith provided the biggest highlights of the afternoon. The star receiver finished with four catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns, turning short receptions into explosive scoring plays.

His first touchdown came on a 33 yard reception in the opening quarter. Smith then struck again with a 40-yard touchdown in the second quarter, giving Ohio State another major boost and adding to his growing reputation as one of college football’s most dangerous playmakers.

Tight end Nate Roberts also delivered a memorable moment, catching a 68 yard touchdown pass from Sayin. The explosive play helped Ohio State establish control early and demonstrated the Buckeyes’ ability to score from anywhere on the field.

Mason Williams added a one yard touchdown reception late in the first half, sending Ohio State into the locker room with a commanding lead.

Running Game Provides Another Weapon

Ohio State’s rushing attack also played a major role in the victory. Running back Bo Jackson rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns, becoming the first Buckeye this season to surpass 100 rushing yards in a game.

Jackson’s physical running helped Ohio State control the clock and wear down Maryland’s defense. Ja’Kobi Jackson contributed 76 rushing yards, giving the Buckeyes another reliable option on the ground.

The balanced offensive performance made it difficult for Maryland to focus exclusively on stopping Sayin and Smith.

Maryland Struggles Against Ohio State’s Defense

Maryland quarterback Malik Washington faced a difficult afternoon against the Buckeyes’ defense. He completed 12 of 25 passes for just 64 yards, as Ohio State consistently limited the Terrapins’ passing opportunities.

Maryland finished with only 145 total rushing yards and struggled to sustain drives. Although the Terrapins managed 16 points, they never seriously threatened Ohio State’s advantage after halftime.

The Buckeyes did have issues with discipline, committing eight penalties for 65 yards. Those mistakes will be an area for Day to address as the schedule becomes more challenging.

A Big Win Before a Difficult Stretch

The victory gives Day and Ohio State momentum heading into a demanding portion of the season. Sayin’s four touchdown passes, Smith’s explosive receiving performance and Jackson’s strong day on the ground showed the offense’s potential.

Ohio State will need to clean up its penalties and other mistakes as it prepares for tougher competition. Maryland, meanwhile, must find more consistency on offense after being held to limited production through the air.

For the Buckeyes, the 45-16 victory was another important step forward as they continue pursuing their Big Ten and national championship goals.
