The Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears will open their 2026 seasons Sunday afternoon in one of the more intriguing matchups of Week 1.
The game features two teams coming off division titles last season, with Carolina hosting Chicago at Bank of America Stadium at 1 p.m. ET on FOX. The Panthers are looking to build on their surprising NFC South championship, while the Bears enter the season with much higher expectations after winning the NFC North and a playoff game last year.
Bryce Young Looks to Take Another Step
The Panthers’ biggest storyline remains Bryce Young.
The former No. 1 overall pick showed significant improvement last season, throwing for more than 3,000 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Now, Young enters another important season with the opportunity to prove he can become Carolina’s long-term franchise quarterback.
Young will have plenty of help around him, including star receiver Tetairoa McMillan, who topped 1,000 receiving yards last season. Chuba Hubbard will also be important as Carolina tries to establish the running game against a Bears defense that struggled against the run last year.
Caleb Williams Enters Year Three
Chicago has similar expectations surrounding Caleb Williams.
Williams threw for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns and only seven interceptions last season while leading the Bears to an 11-6 record and the NFC North title. He also helped Chicago win its first playoff game since 2010.
Now in his third NFL season, Williams is expected to take another major step under head coach Ben Johnson.
The Bears have plenty of weapons around their quarterback, including D’Andre Swift and tight end Colston Loveland. Loveland had a strong rookie season and could be particularly important against a Panthers defense that has struggled to defend tight ends.
Panthers’ Defense Faces Major Test
Carolina’s defense has undergone significant changes during the offseason.
The Panthers added linebackers Devin Lloyd and Bobby Okereke, while Jaelan Phillips provides another major pass-rushing threat. The secondary, led by Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, could also create problems for Chicago’s receivers.
The biggest concern for Carolina is its offensive line. Injuries have affected key players, including Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton, creating questions about whether Young will have enough time to operate effectively.
Key Matchup
The biggest matchup could be Chicago’s defensive front against Carolina’s offensive line.
If the Bears can pressure Young consistently, they could force Carolina into difficult situations. But if the Panthers protect their quarterback and establish Hubbard early, Young has enough weapons to make this a very competitive game.
This is also a fascinating quarterback battle because both Young and Williams were former No. 1 overall picks, and both are trying to establish themselves as franchise quarterbacks.
Chicago enters as a slight favorite, but Carolina has home-field advantage and plenty of confidence after making the playoffs last season.
