The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings will open their 2026 seasons Sunday afternoon with a huge NFC North rivalry matchup at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Both teams finished with winning records last season, and this game could immediately have major implications in a division that is expected to be extremely competitive. Green Bay finished 9-7-1 last year, while Minnesota went 9-8.
Jordan Love Faces Another Tough Test
Jordan Love enters the season as the Packers’ unquestioned starting quarterback and will immediately face one of the NFL’s most complicated defenses.
Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is known for his aggressive and unpredictable pressure packages, frequently disguising blitzes and coverages before the snap. Love has plenty of experience against Flores, but Green Bay’s offensive line could make this matchup particularly difficult.
Love threw for 3,381 yards last season while posting a 102.5 passer rating, and Green Bay will need another efficient performance from its quarterback.
The Packers will also be without running back Josh Jacobs, putting more responsibility on the passing game.
Kyler Murray Begins New Chapter
Minnesota enters the season with a completely different quarterback situation.
Kyler Murray is set to make his Vikings debut after joining the team during the offseason. The former No. 1 overall pick gives Minnesota a much different element at quarterback, particularly because of his ability to create plays outside the pocket.
Murray will have superstar receiver Justin Jefferson as his top target, giving the Vikings one of the most dangerous quarterback-receiver combinations in the division.
Minnesota has also made a major decision behind Murray. Carson Wentz will serve as the backup, while former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy has been moved to QB3 for the opener.
Vikings Defense Could Control the Game
The biggest advantage for Minnesota could be its defense.
Flores’ unit will immediately try to make Love uncomfortable by creating confusion before the snap. Green Bay’s offensive line has injury concerns heading into the game, with Aaron Banks and Zach Bako-Bewele listed as questionable.
The Vikings, meanwhile, enter the opener with a healthy 53-man roster, giving them a significant advantage from a depth standpoint.
Green Bay will need its receivers to win quickly against Minnesota’s secondary, particularly when Flores sends extra pressure.
Key Matchup
The biggest battle will be Jordan Love against Brian Flores’ defense.
If Love can correctly identify Minnesota’s pressure packages and get the ball out quickly, Green Bay has enough offensive talent to score consistently. But if the Vikings can confuse the Packers’ protection and generate pressure, Minnesota could control the game.
