The Detroit Lions delivered a huge divisional victory Sunday, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 19-15 at Ford Field and handing Minnesota its first loss of the season. Detroit came through with a strong second half performance, ending the Vikings’ perfect start while extending its own winning streak to three games.
The Vikings entered the matchup as the NFL’s last undefeated team, but the Lions found a way to take down one of the league’s toughest defenses.
Jahmyr Gibbs Leads Detroit’s Offense
Running back Jahmyr Gibbs played a major role in the victory, rushing for 153 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. His biggest moment came in the third quarter when he broke free for a 30 yard touchdown run, giving Detroit a 12-7 lead.
Quarterback Jared Goff finished 18 of 25 for 176 yards, one touchdown and one interception. After Minnesota regained the lead in the fourth quarter, Goff delivered when the Lions needed him most.
With just 4:35 remaining, Goff connected with Jameson Williams on a seven-yard touchdown pass to put Detroit ahead 19-15. Williams finished with 70 receiving yards and the game winning score.
Vikings Fall Short Late
Minnesota quarterback Kyler Murray completed 17 of 29 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His touchdown passes went to Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson, while Jordan Addison caught the two point conversion that briefly gave Minnesota a 15-12 advantage.
However, the Vikings could not respond after Detroit took the lead. Minnesota went three-and-out on its next possession, allowing the Lions to take control and run out the clock.
Detroit Sends a Message
The victory moves Detroit to 5-2 and gives the Lions their first two divisional wins of the season. Minnesota falls to 6-1, ending its undefeated start.
Detroit also showed it can compete with the NFC’s best by overcoming a late deficit against a previously unbeaten opponent.
The Lions earned an important win in the NFC North, while the Vikings will have to regroup after finally suffering their first defeat of the season.
