Denver scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter before making a dramatic defensive stand on the final play to secure the win.
The victory moves Denver to 6-2 and into first place in the AFC West, while Kansas City falls to 5-2 after suffering its second consecutive loss.
Bo Nix Leads Fourth Quarter Comeback
The Chiefs controlled much of the game behind Patrick Mahomes, who threw three touchdown passes. Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice for an early score before finding rookie Emmett Johnson for a spectacular 73 yard touchdown. Noah Gray added another touchdown reception in the third quarter to give Kansas City a 24-13 advantage.
Denver struggled to find consistency after halftime, but quarterback Bo Nix came through when the game was on the line.
Nix connected with tight end Nate Adkins for a fourth quarter touchdown before finding Jaylen Waddle for the two point conversion. After Kansas City failed to extend its lead with a missed Harrison Butker field goal, Denver quickly took advantage.
Nix found rookie running back Jonah Coleman for a 51 yard reception, setting up Coleman’s five yard touchdown run. The score gave Denver its first lead since the opening quarter.
Broncos Defense Delivers the Final Blow
Kansas City still had an opportunity to steal the victory. Mahomes led the Chiefs down the field and got them inside Denver’s five-yard line in the final seconds.
However, the Broncos defense refused to give up the touchdown. Malcolm Roach delivered the game-ending sack on fourth and goal, sending the Denver crowd into celebration.
Nix finished with 222 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Mahomes threw for 321 yards and three scores.
