LeBron James delivered one of his best performances of the young season Friday night, helping the Philadelphia 76ers defeat the New York Knicks 98-93 in an NBA Cup matchup. James came through when Philadelphia needed him most, making several clutch plays down the stretch to help the Sixers secure another win over the defending NBA champions.
James finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists while shooting 8-of-15 from the field. His biggest contribution came in the final minutes, when the Knicks threatened to steal the game.
LeBron Delivers in the Clutch
Philadelphia appeared to have control for much of the night, but New York refused to go away. Jalen Brunson knocked down a three pointer with 1:32 remaining to give the Knicks a 90-89 lead and put pressure on the Sixers.
James responded with a clutch fadeaway jumper over OG Anunoby with just over a minute remaining, putting Philadelphia back in front. He later added a crucial tip-in to help put the game away.
It was the kind of performance Philadelphia hoped to get when it brought the veteran superstar into the organization. Even at 41 years old, James continues to show he can take over important moments and make a difference on both ends of the floor.
Maxey Provides More Offensive Firepower
While James led the way late, Tyrese Maxey was Philadelphia’s leading scorer with 27 points. Anfernee Simons also made a major impact, adding 21 points off the bench.
For New York, Brunson finished with 24 points and six assists, while Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds.
The victory improved Philadelphia to 5-1 on the season and gave the Sixers their second win over the Knicks this year.
With James continuing to make an impact alongside Maxey and the rest of Philadelphia’s roster, the 76ers are quickly becoming one of the teams to watch in the Eastern Conference.
