The Detroit Lions picked up a huge Week 3 victory Sunday, defeating the New York Jets 31-24 at Ford Field.
Detroit entered the game looking to bounce back after its Week 2 loss to Buffalo, and the Lions got exactly what they needed. Jahmyr Gibbs delivered three total touchdowns, while the defense came up with a game-changing play late to secure the victory.
Gibbs Takes Over
Gibbs was the biggest difference-maker of the afternoon.
The star running back finished with 99 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns while adding another touchdown through the air. His third score came with 2:25 remaining when Jared Goff found him for an 11-yard touchdown that put Detroit back in front.
Goff also delivered a strong performance, throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions spread the ball around to eight different receivers.
Jets Fight Back
Detroit appeared to have control after building a 24-10 lead, but the Jets refused to go away.
Geno Smith led New York’s comeback attempt, throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns. The Jets eventually tied the game at 24 with just over four minutes remaining, putting the pressure back on Detroit.
The Lions responded with a crucial scoring drive, capped by Gibbs’ third touchdown of the game.
Defense Seals the Victory
With the Jets still having a chance late, Detroit’s defense came through with the play it desperately needed.
Chuck Clark broke through and knocked the football out of Smith’s hands with less than a minute remaining. Jack Campbell recovered the fumble, allowing the Lions to run out the clock and secure the 31-24 victory.
Detroit’s defense had struggled during the opening two weeks, but the late takeaway provided the finishing touch.
Lions Move to 2-1
The victory moves Detroit to 2-1 on the season and gives the Lions some momentum heading into their next matchup.
After suffering a 41-31 loss to Buffalo in Week 2, Detroit responded by beating the Jets in a game that came down to the final minutes.
Gibbs’ three touchdown performance and the late defensive stop gave the Lions exactly what they needed as they returned to the win column.
