The Baltimore Ravens are turning to an unexpected option at quarterback as undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano prepares to make his first career NFL start Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley both dealing with injuries, Baltimore has been forced to make a major change at the most important position on the field. Fagnano, who began the season as the team’s third-string quarterback, will now have the opportunity to lead the Ravens during a critical point in their season.
The decision comes after a difficult 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, when Baltimore watched its quarterback situation completely fall apart.
Injuries Force Ravens Into Major Change
Jackson suffered a thumb injury on the opening offensive snap against Buffalo and is expected to land on injured reserve. Huntley also left the game with a toe injury, forcing Fagnano into action for his NFL debut.
The rookie completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and threw an interception. Although the performance was not perfect, Fagnano was suddenly placed in an extremely difficult situation against a talented Buffalo defense.
Now, he will have the opportunity to prepare as the starter rather than being unexpectedly thrown into the game.
Baltimore also added quarterback Kedon Slovis to its active roster after signing him away from the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad. Austin Reed was brought back to the practice squad to provide additional depth.
Fagnano Gets an Unexpected Opportunity
Fagnano’s journey to becoming an NFL starter is an impressive one.
The former UConn quarterback went undrafted before earning a spot on Baltimore’s 53-man roster following a strong preseason. He threw for 509 yards and three touchdowns during the preseason, showing enough potential to convince the coaching staff he deserved a place on the team.
Head coach Jesse Minter has expressed confidence in the rookie, praising his composure and ability to operate the offense.
Fagnano also dealt with an ankle injury against Buffalo, but he participated fully in Tuesday’s practice while wearing a brace.
A Difficult Challenge Against Jacksonville
The timing of Fagnano’s first start could hardly be more challenging.
The Ravens will face a Jacksonville Jaguars team that has been playing strong football and currently holds a 5-2 record. Baltimore enters the matchup at 4-4 and has lost three consecutive games.
The Ravens will likely need to lean heavily on Derrick Henry and their running game to take pressure off the rookie quarterback. Protecting the football and avoiding costly mistakes will also be extremely important.
Ravens Need a Spark
Fagnano’s first NFL start represents a major opportunity for both him and Baltimore.
The Ravens were expected to compete for a championship this season, but injuries have suddenly created serious questions about their future.
Now, an undrafted rookie will be asked to help keep the season alive. It is an enormous responsibility, but Fagnano has already shown Baltimore enough to earn the coaching staff’s confidence.
Thursday night could become the biggest opportunity of his football career.
