The Miami Heat are off to a disastrous start to the 2026-27 NBA season, and the early struggles are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Despite adding superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to a roster featuring Bam Adebayo and several experienced veterans, Miami has opened the season with four consecutive losses.

The Heat fell 113-109 to the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night, dropping to 0-4. Although Giannis delivered his first triple double with Miami, the team once again struggled to close out a winnable game. With expectations high following the offseason changes, questions are already emerging about what is going wrong in South Beach.

Shooting Struggles Are Hurting Miami

One of Miami’s biggest problems has been its inability to consistently knock down outside shots. The Heat brought in experienced shooters, including Klay Thompson and Tim Hardaway Jr., to provide spacing around Giannis and create more offensive opportunities.

So far, that strategy has not produced the expected results.

When opposing defenses can focus on Giannis without worrying about reliable perimeter shooting, Miami’s offense becomes easier to defend. Giannis can create opportunities by attacking the basket, but those drives become less effective when teammates fail to capitalize on open looks.

Andrew Wiggins has also struggled from beyond the arc, adding to Miami’s shooting concerns.

The Defense Has Lost Its Identity

Defense has traditionally been a major part of the Heat’s identity under head coach Erik Spoelstra. However, Miami has struggled to consistently stop opponents during its opening four games.

The Heat allowed 131 points against Minnesota and 128 against Detroit before giving up 115 to Charlotte. Although the Dallas game was more competitive, Miami still surrendered too many important baskets down the stretch.

The team also needs to improve its rebounding. Allowing opponents additional possessions makes it difficult to win close games, particularly when the offense is struggling to score efficiently.

Giannis and Adebayo Need Better Chemistry

Another concern is the developing partnership between Giannis and Adebayo. Both players are talented, but combining two stars who operate most effectively near the basket requires adjustments.

Giannis recorded 29 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists against Dallas, while Adebayo managed just eight points. Miami needs more consistent production from its second star to prevent opposing defenses from concentrating on Giannis.

Can Miami Turn Things Around?

Four losses do not define an entire season, but the Heat need to respond quickly. Better shooting, stronger defensive effort and improved chemistry are essential if Miami hopes to compete in the Eastern Conference.

The talent is there. Now, Spoelstra and his players must find a way to make it work before this difficult start becomes an even bigger problem.
