Angel Reese Faces Biggest Challenge Yet as Valkyries Take Control of WNBA Finals

Angel Reese has delivered some of the biggest performances of her young career during the 2026 WNBA Finals, but the Atlanta Dream star now faces her toughest challenge of the series. After helping Atlanta take a 2-1 lead against the Golden State Valkyries, Reese has struggled to find her scoring rhythm as Golden State’s defense has taken control.

The Valkyries won Games 4 and 5 to take a 3-2 series lead, leaving Atlanta one loss away from elimination. Reese will need to help lead a response if the Dream hope to keep their championship aspirations alive.

Reese Delivers Historic Performance

Reese announced herself on the biggest stage with an outstanding performance in Game 2. She recorded 30 points and 16 rebounds in Atlanta’s 79-65 victory, becoming the youngest player in WNBA Finals history to record at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a game.

She followed that performance with another double-double in Game 3, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds as Atlanta defeated Golden State 97-71. Her production helped the Dream take control of the series and put them two victories away from a championship.

Reese’s ability to dominate the boards while contributing offensively has been a major part of Atlanta’s success. Her energy, physicality and determination have made her one of the central figures in the Finals.

Golden State Finds an Answer

The Valkyries have responded by making life increasingly difficult for Reese around the basket. She scored just eight points in Game 4 before finishing with seven points and 15 rebounds in Monday’s 64-55 loss.

Golden State’s interior defense, led by Kiah Stokes, has disrupted Atlanta’s offensive rhythm. Reese has also expressed frustration with the physical play and foul calls throughout the series.

Despite her scoring struggles, Reese continues to contribute on the glass. Her 15 rebounds in Game 5 helped Atlanta compete in a low scoring contest, even as the Dream struggled to generate consistent offense.

Atlanta Needs Reese to Respond

With the series returning to Atlanta for Game 6 on Thursday, Reese has another opportunity to change the momentum. The Dream need a stronger offensive performance and better execution to avoid elimination.

Reese has already demonstrated that she can take over a Finals game. Now, Atlanta needs that version of its star again.

If she can rediscover her scoring touch while maintaining her rebounding production, the Dream could force a decisive Game 7 and keep their championship hopes alive.
