Clemson will return to Death Valley Saturday night looking to put one of the worst losses of the Dabo Swinney era behind it.
The Tigers will host Georgia Southern at 7:30 p.m. ET as Clemson attempts to earn its first victory of the 2026 season. Clemson enters the matchup 0-1 after suffering a stunning 51-10 loss to LSU in the season opener.
After such a disappointing performance, Saturday’s game becomes much more important than a typical early-season matchup.
Clemson Needs A Response
The biggest question surrounding Clemson is how the team responds.
The Tigers were completely overwhelmed by LSU, being outgained 644-145 while allowing LSU to record 38 first downs. It was the most lopsided defeat of Swinney’s 19-season tenure at Clemson.
Now Clemson has a chance to regroup against Georgia Southern.
Swinney has emphasized that the season is far from over, pointing out that Clemson still has 11 games remaining. A dominant performance Saturday would go a long way toward calming some of the concerns surrounding the program.
Can The Offense Find Its Rhythm?
Clemson’s offense has to be much better.
The Tigers struggled to consistently move the football against LSU, and the offensive line had difficulty handling the Tigers’ defensive front.
Georgia Southern provides Clemson with an opportunity to get the offense back on track. The Tigers need to establish the run, protect the quarterback and create explosive plays early.
A strong offensive performance could provide some much-needed confidence heading into the rest of the season.
Pressure Is Building Around Swinney
There is no ignoring the pressure surrounding Swinney.
Clemson finished 7-6 last season after entering the year ranked No. 4 in the preseason AP poll, and the disastrous start to 2026 has only increased questions about the direction of the program.
Swinney remains one of the most successful coaches in Clemson history, but expectations in Death Valley remain extremely high.
Saturday gives the Tigers a chance to start answering some of those questions.
Clemson should have a significant talent advantage over Georgia Southern, and anything less than a convincing victory would likely create even more concern.
The Tigers need to forget what happened in Baton Rouge and show that the LSU loss was an ugly beginning rather than a sign of what’s to come.
