The Clemson Tigers have officially made their decision at quarterback.

Head coach Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday that Christopher Vizzina will be Clemson’s starting quarterback for the 2026 season opener against LSU. The decision ends a competitive battle between Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds and gives the Tigers their answer at one of the most important positions on the roster.

Vizzina enters the season with limited starting experience but has spent the past several years developing behind former Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik. The senior has appeared in 14 career games and enters 2026 having completed 64 of 105 passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He has also shown some ability as a runner, rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown during his Clemson career.

The quarterback competition was one of the biggest storylines surrounding Clemson throughout the offseason. Reynolds, a highly regarded freshman, pushed Vizzina throughout spring and fall camp and gave Swinney a legitimate decision to make. Ultimately, Vizzina’s experience and consistency helped him earn the starting job.

“He’s earned that,” Swinney said when discussing the decision.

Vizzina will now face an enormous challenge in his first start of the season. Clemson opens the year against LSU on Saturday, September 5, in Baton Rouge. The matchup will immediately put the Tigers’ new quarterback under the spotlight as Clemson looks to compete for the ACC and College Football Playoff.

Even though Vizzina has been named the starter, Swinney indicated that Reynolds could still see playing time against LSU. That gives Clemson the flexibility to get its talented freshman on the field while allowing Vizzina to lead the offense.

For Vizzina, this is the opportunity he has been waiting for since arriving at Clemson in 2023. With Klubnik now in the NFL, the Tigers needed someone to step into the leadership role at quarterback.

Now, Vizzina has that chance.

The pressure will be high, especially with LSU waiting in Week 1, but Clemson clearly believes Vizzina is ready. His performance against the Tigers could set the tone for what could be a pivotal season for both the quarterback and the program.
