A record-breaking season ended in stunning fashion Monday as Georgia Tech watched a 50-win campaign slip away on its home field.
The Yellow Jackets, the No. 2 national seed and hosts of the Atlanta Regional, blew an 8-2 lead Sunday in a 15-8 loss to Oklahoma before surrendering another advantage Monday, falling 8-7 in 10 innings in a winner-take-all regional final. Georgia Tech led 7-3 after scoring seven unanswered runs, but Oklahoma rallied late and walked off the Jackets in extras to advance.
For a team that spent the spring rewriting school records, winning 50 games and positioning itself as a legitimate College World Series contender, the ending was almost impossible to comprehend. Georgia Tech entered the regional as one of the nation’s hottest teams and appeared to be cruising toward a super regional berth before everything unraveled over the final two days.
Instead of celebrating a trip to the next round, the Yellow Jackets are left wondering how a season filled with historic success ended after blowing leads of 8-2 and 7-3 in consecutive days. Oklahoma capitalized on every opening, and Georgia Tech’s postseason dreams vanished in front of a stunned home crowd.
