Rumors surrounding the long-term stability of LIV Golf have intensified following a difficult stretch for the Saudi-backed league, with concerns ranging from declining star performance to geopolitical complications and ongoing questions about its global standing in professional golf.

While there is no confirmed indication that LIV Golf is folding, multiple developments during the 2026 season have fueled speculation about its future viability.

Lack of consistent star power

One of the biggest concerns surrounding LIV Golf is the fading impact of its marquee names. Several of the league’s biggest signings have struggled to maintain elite form in major championships, most notably at the 2026 Masters.

High-profile players such as Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, and Cameron Smith all failed to seriously contend at Augusta National, while several LIV participants missed the cut entirely. Tyrrell Hatton emerged as one of the few bright spots, but overall results reinforced concerns about competitive depth compared to PGA Tour players.

Critics have pointed to this decline in major performance as a sign that LIV’s breakaway structure may be impacting competitive sharpness at the highest level of the sport.

Masters performance adds pressure

The Masters has historically been the most important measuring stick for LIV Golf’s legitimacy, and the 2026 edition further complicated its narrative.

Only a small portion of LIV’s field finished under par, while PGA Tour returnees and traditional circuit players occupied the top of the leaderboard. Reports highlighted that LIV players appeared less prepared compared to competitors who had played a more traditional schedule leading into Augusta.

The disparity has renewed debate over whether LIV’s limited-event format adequately prepares its players for golf’s biggest stages.

Middle East geopolitical complications

LIV Golf’s deep financial and operational ties to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund have also placed the league in the middle of broader geopolitical tensions.

Earlier this year, several LIV players were temporarily stranded in the Middle East due to regional conflict and flight disruptions, underscoring how external instability can directly impact league logistics.

While players were eventually transported safely, the incident highlighted the logistical vulnerabilities of a tour heavily reliant on international travel through politically sensitive regions.

Structural and competitive concerns

Beyond performance and politics, LIV Golf continues to face unresolved structural issues. The league is still pursuing Official World Golf Ranking recognition, which remains limited and conditional, restricting pathways into majors for many of its players.

Even with recent format changes to 72-hole events and expanded fields, critics argue that LIV is still struggling to match the competitive ecosystem of established tours.

Additionally, player movement has created instability, with multiple departures, contract disputes, and returns to the PGA Tour further weakening continuity.

Outlook

Despite speculation, LIV Golf continues to operate with significant financial backing and a packed global schedule. However, questions about its long-term competitiveness, star retention, and relevance in golf’s traditional structure remain unresolved.

For now, industry observers say talk of LIV “folding” is premature — but acknowledge that the league is facing its most challenging credibility test since its inception.
