Buckeyes End Indiana’s Winning Streak With Crucial Road Victory
The No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes earned a hard fought 19-15 victory over No. 5 Indiana on Saturday, October 17, at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. In a defensive battle between two of college football’s top teams, Ohio State made enough plays late to secure the win and snap Indiana’s 22 game winning streak.
Head coach Ryan Day’s Buckeyes improved to 6-1 overall and remained unbeaten in Big Ten play. Indiana, led by Curt Cignetti, suffered its first loss of the season after entering the matchup undefeated at 6-0. The result also gave Ohio State a measure of revenge after Indiana defeated the Buckeyes in last season’s Big Ten Championship Game.
Ohio State’s Defense Sets the Tone
The Buckeyes’ defense played a major role in the victory, taking advantage of mistakes and making key stops throughout the afternoon.
Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover struggled to find consistency against Ohio State’s pressure, while the Hoosiers’ offense had difficulty turning promising possessions into touchdowns.
Ohio State also forced costly turnovers, including interceptions by Indiana’s defense that kept the game competitive. The teams traded momentum throughout the afternoon, and neither offense was able to establish complete control.
The Buckeyes entered the fourth quarter with a narrow advantage, setting up a tense finish as Indiana searched for a late comeback.
Jeremiah Smith Delivers a Crucial Touchdown
Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith provided one of the game’s biggest plays, hauling in a touchdown reception that helped the Buckeyes maintain their lead.
Smith finished with four receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown, giving quarterback Julian Sayin an important target in a difficult matchup. Indiana’s defense limited Smith’s opportunities for much of the game, but his scoring catch proved decisive.
Sayin’s afternoon ended prematurely after he suffered an apparent upper body injury in the fourth quarter. Freshman backup Luke Fahey entered the game, leaving Ohio State’s offense with another challenge during the closing minutes.
Indiana’s Final Drive Falls Short
The Hoosiers had one last opportunity to steal the victory. Hoover moved Indiana down the field, giving the home crowd hope of another dramatic finish.
On fourth down, Hoover found a wide open Nick Marsh in the end zone. However, Marsh was ruled out of bounds, ending Indiana’s comeback attempt and allowing Ohio State to escape with the four-point win.
The final play capped a frustrating afternoon for Indiana, which had opportunities to take control but could not capitalize on enough of them.
A Significant Win for Ohio State
The victory gives Day and Ohio State an important result in the Big Ten race. The Buckeyes relied on their defense, made key plays in critical moments and survived a late challenge on the road.
For Cignetti and Indiana, the loss ends an impressive winning streak but does not erase the team’s strong start to the season.
Ohio State leaves Bloomington with a 19-15 victory, while both programs will now turn their attention toward the remainder of their conference schedules.
