Philadelphia Will Be Without Its Star Running Back Again

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without star running back Saquon Barkley for Sunday’s Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers after the team officially ruled him out with a hamstring injury.

Barkley’s absence is another significant setback for Philadelphia, which is already dealing with quarterback Jalen Hurts being sidelined because of a superficial blood clot in his calf. The Eagles enter the weekend at 2-3 and are looking to snap a three game losing streak.

With two of their most important offensive players unavailable, Philadelphia faces a difficult challenge as it attempts to get its season back on track.

Barkley Continues to Battle His Injury

Barkley has been dealing with the hamstring injury since Philadelphia’s Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He exited that game after experiencing discomfort and subsequently missed the Eagles’ international matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The running back has not practiced this week, and the Eagles confirmed Friday that he would miss another game. His recovery remains an important storyline for a Philadelphia offense that depends on his ability to create explosive plays and establish a physical running game.

Barkley’s absence is particularly frustrating after the expectations surrounding him entering the 2026 season. Philadelphia brought him back to lead the backfield and provide balance to an offense built around Hurts’ passing and rushing abilities.

However, injuries have prevented the Eagles from consistently using their preferred offensive personnel.

Dameon Pierce Expected to Lead the Backfield

With Barkley unavailable, Dameon Pierce is expected to receive an increased workload against Carolina.

Pierce could become an important part of Philadelphia’s game plan, especially with backup quarterback Tanner McKee preparing to start in place of Hurts. The Eagles may need to rely more heavily on their running game and short passes to help McKee settle into the offense.

Carson Steele is another option who could contribute in the backfield. Philadelphia will need both players to make the most of their opportunities against a Panthers defense looking to take advantage of the Eagles’ injury problems.

The team also placed fellow running back Will Shipley on injured reserve, further limiting its available depth at the position.

Eagles Need a Response

Sunday’s game represents an important opportunity for Philadelphia to stop its losing streak, but Barkley’s absence makes that challenge more difficult.

The Eagles will need their offensive line to create running lanes, their remaining backs to produce consistently and their receivers to help McKee move the football.

Philadelphia still has enough talent to compete, but losing Barkley and Hurts simultaneously leaves little room for mistakes.

For now, the Eagles’ priority is getting healthier while finding a way to win without two of their biggest offensive stars. Barkley’s return timeline remains uncertain, and Philadelphia will need its supporting players to step up until he is ready to return.
