Falcons Add Veteran Pass Rusher Za’Darius Smith

The Atlanta Falcons are adding some much needed experience to their defensive front, signing veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith to a one year contract. The deal is reportedly worth $6 million and can reach $8 million with incentives.

The move comes at an important time for Atlanta. The Falcons recently lost first round pick Jalon Walker for the season with a knee injury, while James Pearce Jr. is suspended for the first eight games of the 2026 season. Smith gives Atlanta another proven veteran to help fill the void and provide pressure off the edge.

Smith, a three time Pro Bowler, brings plenty of experience to the Falcons. He has recorded 70.5 career sacks over 11 NFL seasons, including a career-high 13.5 sacks with the Green Bay Packers in 2019. He also has familiarity with Atlanta head coach Kevin Stefanski after playing under him in Cleveland during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The signing is also notable because Smith is returning to the NFL after announcing his retirement in October 2025. He spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, appearing in five games before stepping away from football.

At 33 years old, Smith isn’t necessarily expected to be the player he was during his Pro Bowl seasons, but the Falcons don’t need him to be. They need a reliable veteran who can help stabilize a suddenly thin pass rush. If Smith can stay healthy and provide consistent pressure, his return could be a valuable addition for Atlanta heading into the 2026 season.
