Browns QB Battle Remains Wide Open After Preseason Opener

The Cleveland Browns entered their first preseason game with one of the most intriguing quarterback battles in the NFL. After Saturday’s 34-10 loss to the Chicago Bears, however, the competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders remains far from settled.

Watson got the start and played the first half, giving him the first opportunity to make his case in a game setting. The veteran quarterback completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards and helped lead Cleveland on two scoring drives. He also had a fumble, but overall, his performance provided some encouraging signs after returning from significant Achilles injuries.

Sanders took over in the second half and had a much tougher outing. The second-year quarterback completed just 6 of 11 passes for 79 yards and threw an interception late in the game. He showed flashes, including completions of 24 and 35 yards, but turnovers and inconsistent execution kept him from creating the separation he needed.

Still, it would be premature to declare Watson the winner. Head coach Todd Monken has repeatedly emphasized that the competition is ongoing, and the Browns have structured the preseason to give both quarterbacks opportunities. Sanders is scheduled to start the first half against the Buffalo Bills in Cleveland’s second preseason game.

For now, Watson appears to have the edge based on the first game, but the Browns still have important evaluations ahead. Sanders will get his chance against Buffalo, and how each quarterback performs with more first team opportunities could ultimately determine who takes the field as Cleveland’s Week 1 starter.

The Browns may have lost the preseason opener, but their quarterback battle is only getting started.
