Giants Sign Jameis Winston to Two Year Extension
The New York Giants have made sure one of the NFL’s most experienced backup quarterbacks isn’t going anywhere.
The Giants have agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract extension with Jameis Winston, keeping the veteran quarterback in New York through the 2028 season. The move gives the Giants stability behind young starter Jaxson Dart while rewarding Winston for his impact both on and off the field.
Valuable Experience Behind Dart
Winston’s role in New York has become much more than simply being a backup quarterback.
The former No. 1 overall pick brings more than a decade of NFL experience to a quarterback room led by Dart. Winston has played in 108 career games with 89 starts, throwing for 24,792 yards, 156 touchdowns and 113 interceptions during his career.
That experience could be extremely valuable for Dart as the young quarterback continues to develop into the Giants’ long-term starter.
Winston Has Already Proven His Value
Winston was forced into action last season when the Giants dealt with injuries at quarterback.
He appeared in three games and made two starts, completing 37 of 66 passes for 567 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also contributed with his legs, rushing for a touchdown.
While Winston isn’t expected to challenge Dart for the starting job, his ability to step in when needed gives New York an experienced insurance option.
A Smart Move for New York
The extension also gives the Giants some salary-cap flexibility while keeping a veteran they clearly value.
Winston originally joined the Giants on a two-year, $8 million contract in 2025. Now, the organization has committed to keeping him around for the next two seasons as Dart’s backup and mentor.
For a team hoping to build around a young quarterback, having an experienced player like Winston in the room can be extremely important.
