Blood Clots in Hurts’ Lungs Raise Serious Health Concerns
The Philadelphia Eagles have received concerning news about quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is expected to miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season after doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs.
The Eagles and Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, announced Monday that further medical testing revealed deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. The diagnosis is more serious than the superficial blood clot initially discovered in Hurts’ left calf earlier this month.
Despite the concerning diagnosis, the Eagles provided an encouraging update about the quarterback’s overall condition. Hurts is clinically stable, has no significant functional limitations and is expected to make a full recovery without long-term effects.
How Did the Injury Happen?
The issue began after Hurts was cleated in the calf during Philadelphia’s October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams. He later received treatment for the injury and continued practicing before the Eagles traveled to London to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.
A medical examination in London revealed a superficial blood clot in his calf. Hurts was initially cleared to play and appeared in the Eagles’ 19-17 loss to Jacksonville on October 11.
However, follow-up testing after the game revealed changes in the clot, prompting additional medical evaluations. Those tests eventually uncovered the more serious condition involving his lungs.
Hurts was ruled out for Philadelphia’s Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers and placed on injured reserve on October 17. The Eagles announced the expanded diagnosis Monday, confirming that his absence would extend well beyond the original injury timeline.
What Does This Mean for the Eagles?
Hurts’ absence creates a significant challenge for a Philadelphia team that has struggled in recent weeks. The Eagles fell to 2-4 after losing 25-14 to Carolina on Sunday, extending their losing streak to four games.
Backup quarterback Tanner McKee started against the Panthers and is expected to take on an increased role with Hurts sidelined. Philadelphia will need improved offensive execution to remain competitive while adjusting to life without its starting quarterback.
Hurts entered the season as one of the franchise’s most important players, bringing his dual-threat ability and leadership to an offense built around his strengths.
Eagles Prioritize Hurts’ Recovery
Hurts will receive treatment involving blood thinners and cannot participate in contact football activities while taking the medication. The team expects him to remain involved with the organization and continue conditioning as his recovery progresses.
Although missing the remainder of the season is a major setback for Hurts and Philadelphia, his long-term health is the priority. The Eagles remain optimistic about his recovery, with the focus now on ensuring he can eventually return to football safely.
Prayers for hurts!
