The San Francisco 49ers continued their undefeated start to the 2026 NFL season Monday night, defeating the Washington Commanders 23-17 at Levi’s Stadium. San Francisco dominated the first half before nearly allowing a comfortable lead to slip away, ultimately relying on its defense to secure another victory.
The win improved the 49ers to 6-0, giving them their best start since the 2019 season, when they reached the Super Bowl. However, the second half struggles showed that San Francisco still has areas to address despite its impressive record.
Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey Lead the Offense
Quarterback Brock Purdy got San Francisco off to a fast start, connecting with tight end George Kittle for an 11 yard touchdown to cap the opening drive. Purdy consistently moved the offense downfield early, finishing with 264 passing yards and one touchdown while completing 21 of 29 attempts.
Running back Christian McCaffrey also played a major role in the victory. McCaffrey scored twice on one-yard touchdown runs, helping the 49ers establish control and put Washington in an early hole.
San Francisco entered halftime with a commanding 20-3 advantage after outgaining Washington 303-90 in the opening two quarters. The 49ers added a 33 yard field goal from Eddy Piñeiro in the third quarter to extend their lead to 23-3.
Wide receiver Mike Evans contributed three receptions for 94 yards before leaving with an aggravated Achilles injury just before halftime. His departure became a significant concern as the 49ers struggled to generate offense after the break.
Commanders Make a Comeback Attempt
Washington refused to go away quietly. Quarterback Jayden Daniels sparked the comeback with a one-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs late in the third quarter. Daniels then connected with Rachaad White for a nine-yard touchdown in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 23-17.
The Commanders suddenly had an opportunity to steal the game, putting pressure on a San Francisco offense that struggled to sustain drives in the second half.
Washington reached the 49ers’ 17-yard line with less than two minutes remaining, but safety Malik Mustapha delivered a crucial pass breakup on fourth down to preserve the lead.
San Francisco Finishes the Job
The Commanders received one final opportunity, moving into San Francisco territory in the closing seconds. However, Keion White and Ogbo Okoronkwo brought Daniels down for a game-ending sack.
The 49ers escaped with the victory, but their second-half performance will give head coach Kyle Shanahan plenty to review. San Francisco’s offense stalled, while penalties and defensive breakdowns allowed Washington back into the contest.
Despite the late scare, the 49ers remain unbeaten at 6-0. Their ability to win a close game could prove valuable as the season continues, but maintaining their early dominance for four quarters will be essential if they hope to remain among the NFL’s elite.
