Trojans Deliver Big Road Victory

The USC Trojans earned an impressive road victory Saturday night, defeating Penn State 31-23 in front of a record crowd at Beaver Stadium. No. 19 USC overcame a hostile White Out environment and delivered a strong offensive performance to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play.

Head coach Lincoln Riley watched his team make the necessary plays down the stretch to secure the win. Meanwhile, Penn State head coach Matt Campbell saw his Nittany Lions fall to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play after another difficult result.

Maiava Leads USC’s Offense

USC quarterback Jayden Maiava delivered an outstanding performance, completing 21 of 33 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Maiava connected with Trent Mosley for a 19 yard touchdown in the first quarter to give USC an early lead. Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht answered with a 13 yard touchdown pass to Andrew Rappleyea, tying the game at 7-7.

The teams continued trading scores throughout the first half. Maiava found Tanook Hines for an 11 yard touchdown, while Penn State responded with Carson Hansen’s three-yard rushing score. Field goals from Caden Chittenden and Ryan Barker sent the teams into halftime tied at 17-17.

Trojans Take Control After Halftime

Penn State grabbed its first lead early in the third quarter when Barker connected on a 35 yard field goal, putting the Nittany Lions ahead 20-17.

USC responded with a 75 yard drive that ended with King Miller’s 13 yard touchdown run. The score put the Trojans back in front, 24-20, and gave them momentum heading into the fourth quarter.

Barker added a 26 yard field goal early in the final period to pull Penn State within one point. However, Maiava delivered another crucial scoring drive, finding Kayden Dixon-Wyatt for a 10 yard touchdown that extended USC’s lead to 31-23.

USC Finishes the Job

The Trojans’ defense made the necessary plays late, including a forced fumble by Christian Pierce with under four minutes remaining. USC recovered the ball and ran out the clock, silencing the record crowd of 114,419 fans.

Mosley finished with nine catches for 111 yards, while Miller contributed 102 rushing yards. Becht completed 21 of 32 passes for 289 yards and one touchdown for Penn State.

The victory gives USC valuable momentum in the Big Ten race. For Penn State, the Nittany Lions will need to find answers quickly after dropping their third consecutive game.
