The Los Angeles Rams made a fascinating decision.
They went to Australia late.
The San Francisco 49ers went early.
Very early.
The 49ers have spent significantly more time adjusting to Melbourne’s time zone. The Rams instead kept their normal U.S. routine and planned to arrive shortly before Thursday’s game.
It is either extremely smart.
Or completely insane.
There does not appear to be much middle ground.
The Rams are expected to contend for the Super Bowl. They added Myles Garrett and brought Aaron Donald back into the organization after his retirement, although Donald will not play Thursday.
Meanwhile, Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams headline a loaded offense.
San Francisco is betting preparation will matter.
Los Angeles is betting its normal routine matters more.
And now we get the experiment.
If the Rams win, Sean McVay is going to look like a genius.
If they lose badly?
Everyone is going to ask why the team treated Australia like a road trip to Phoenix.
