For the first time in a long time, there is real excitement surrounding the Carolina Panthers.
After years of rebuilding, quarterback questions and disappointing seasons, Carolina is beginning to look like a team that could be building something special. The Panthers proved that Sunday night by taking down the Detroit Lions 32-26 in prime time, improving to 2-2 on the season.
At the center of it all are two players the franchise hopes can become the faces of the team for years to come: Bryce Young and Tetairoa McMillan.
The two young stars put together their best performance together yet, showing exactly why Carolina believes they can lead the Panthers back into contention.
Bryce Young Looks Like a Different Quarterback
Young has faced plenty of criticism since becoming the No. 1 overall pick in 2023, but his development is becoming impossible to ignore.
Against Detroit, Young looked confident, aggressive and in control of the offense. He completed 29 of 41 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception.
More importantly, he made big throws when Carolina needed them most.
Young consistently trusted his receivers and repeatedly gave McMillan opportunities to make plays. When Detroit’s defense started putting pressure on Carolina late in the game, Young stayed composed and delivered one of his biggest throws of the night to McMillan on a crucial third down.
Through four games, Young has now established himself as one of the NFL’s most productive passers. He entered the week leading the league in passing yards and added another 329 yard performance against Detroit.
This is the version of Young Carolina fans have been waiting to see.
TMac Is Becoming a Superstar
If Young is the engine of the offense, McMillan is quickly becoming its biggest weapon.
The second year wide receiver had a career night against Detroit, catching 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
It was the type of performance that showed McMillan has the potential to become one of the NFL’s elite receivers.
He consistently created separation, made difficult catches and came through in important situations. His second touchdown gave Carolina control in the second half, while his late third-down catch helped the Panthers drain valuable time off the clock.
McMillan was especially impressive considering Carolina was dealing with injuries at wide receiver. Instead of allowing those absences to hurt the offense, the Panthers leaned on their biggest playmaker.
And Young trusted him.
That chemistry could become one of the most important developments in Carolina’s future.
Dave Canales Has Carolina Believing
Head coach Dave Canales deserves credit for helping create an environment where Young and McMillan can continue developing together.
Canales has made it clear that the relationship between his quarterback and young receiver is something Carolina wants to build around.
The Panthers’ offense also showed balance against Detroit. Chuba Hubbard rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns, giving Carolina another major threat and preventing the Lions from simply focusing on Young and McMillan.
That balance is important.
If Carolina can consistently run the football while Young makes plays through the air, this offense could become much more difficult to defend.
The Panthers Are Starting to Believe
There is still a long way to go.
Carolina is only 2-2, and the NFC is loaded with talented teams. The Panthers have plenty of areas they need to improve, particularly after allowing Detroit to throw for more than 400 yards.
But Sunday night was about more than one victory.
It was about seeing Young play with confidence. It was about watching McMillan take over a prime-time game. It was about seeing a young Panthers team hold on when Detroit had a chance to steal the game late.
Most importantly, it was about giving Carolina fans something they have not had enough of in recent years: hope.
Bryce Young and TMac are becoming the faces of this team, and if their connection continues to grow, the Panthers could be much closer to being back than anyone expected.
The Panthers aren’t just rebuilding anymore. They are starting to look like a team that belongs in the conversation.
