Not many people expected Kirk Cousins to become one of the biggest stories of the 2026 NFL season.

At 38 years old, Cousins entered the year with plenty of questions surrounding his future. After leaving Atlanta and signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, the veteran quarterback was expected to serve as a bridge while the franchise developed No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.

Instead, Cousins has turned into one of the biggest reasons the Raiders have completely changed the direction of their franchise.

After going 3-14 last season, Las Vegas opened this season 3-0 and matched its entire win total from 2025 in just three games. Cousins was at the center of that turnaround, leading an offense that has looked dramatically different under new head coach Klint Kubiak.

Cousins Looks Like His Old Self Again

For years, Cousins built his reputation as one of the NFL’s most accurate and consistent quarterbacks.

But injuries and an unsuccessful stint in Atlanta raised questions about whether he still had enough left to be a starting quarterback.

Las Vegas has provided the answer.

Cousins has looked comfortable in Kubiak’s offense, which emphasizes play action, quick decisions and getting the ball out of his hands. Those concepts fit perfectly with what Cousins has done throughout his career.

Through the Raiders’ first three games, Cousins had thrown for a league-high nine touchdowns, showing that he still has plenty left in the tank.

His Week 2 performance against the Chargers was especially impressive. Cousins completed 19 of 29 passes for 253 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while facing an offense that struggled to give him much help from the running game.

That is the type of performance that makes the Raiders believe this could be more than just a temporary resurgence.

The Kubiak Connection

A major reason for Cousins’ success is his relationship with Kubiak.

The two are familiar with each other from their time together in Minnesota, giving Cousins an advantage in understanding the offensive system.

Kubiak has put Cousins in situations where he can make quick reads and take advantage of his accuracy. The Raiders have also built their offense around their talented tight ends, particularly Brock Bowers.

That combination has allowed Cousins to play to his strengths rather than asking him to become something he isn’t.

The results have been impressive.

From Bridge Quarterback to Leader

Perhaps the biggest change is how the perception of Cousins has shifted.

When the Raiders signed him, the expectation was that he would keep the team competitive while Mendoza learned the NFL game.

Now, Cousins is giving Las Vegas a reason to be patient with the rookie.

Mendoza does not have to be rushed onto the field because Cousins is playing well enough to keep the Raiders competitive.

That is a massive development for the franchise.

Instead of throwing a rookie quarterback into a struggling team, Las Vegas can allow Mendoza to learn from one of the league’s most experienced quarterbacks.

The Raiders Are Believing Again

Cousins’ resurgence is happening at the perfect time for the Raiders.

Las Vegas has gone from one of the NFL’s worst teams to one of the league’s biggest early-season surprises. The defense has created turnovers, Kubiak has brought stability to the offense and Cousins has provided veteran leadership.

Even though the Raiders lost a dramatic 30-27 game to Kansas City on Sunday, Cousins continued fighting until the final seconds. He threw a late touchdown and completed a two-point conversion to help bring Las Vegas back into the game before the final drive ended in an interception.

That loss does not erase what Cousins has accomplished.

At 38 years old, he is showing that his career may have plenty of life left.

Kirk Cousins came to Las Vegas expecting to be a bridge. Instead, he has become one of the biggest reasons the Raiders believe they can build something special.
