A Massive SEC Opener
The SEC season begins with one of the biggest games of the weekend as No. 1 Texas travels to Knoxville to take on No. 14 Tennessee.
Both teams enter the matchup undefeated at 3-0, but Texas has already faced a major test. The Longhorns rallied from a 20-point deficit to defeat then-No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 in Week 2. Tennessee, meanwhile, has cruised through its first three games and is now preparing for its biggest challenge of the season.
The game will kick off at noon ET on ABC from a sold-out Neyland Stadium.
Arch Manning Faces His First SEC Road Test
One of the biggest storylines will be Texas quarterback Arch Manning making his first trip to Neyland Stadium.
Manning has thrown for 664 yards and seven touchdowns with two interceptions through three games while leading Texas to an average of 37.7 points per game. His biggest moment came against Ohio State, when he helped engineer three fourth-quarter touchdown drives during Texas’ comeback victory.
Now Manning will face his first true SEC road environment.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel has praised Manning’s command of the offense and his ability to remain composed under pressure. The Volunteers will look to make that pressure much more difficult Saturday.
Tennessee’s Young Quarterback Gets His Biggest Test
On the other side, Tennessee will turn to freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon.
Brandon has helped the Volunteers start 3-0 and has shown impressive decision-making during his first college season. He has benefited from a strong Tennessee rushing attack, which has allowed the Vols to avoid putting the entire offense on his shoulders.
That balance could be critical against Texas.
The Longhorn defense has been particularly good at limiting explosive plays. Texas has allowed only two plays from scrimmage of more than 20 yards this season, according to analysis from Action Network.
Tennessee will need to find ways to consistently move the football without relying exclusively on big plays.
Neyland Stadium Will Be Rocking
If there is one thing Tennessee has going for it, it’s the environment.
Saturday’s game will feature a sold-out Checker Neyland, with the stadium expected to be at its loudest for the Volunteers’ first SEC game of the season. Tennessee has sold out 30 consecutive games dating back to 2022.
ESPN College GameDay will also be broadcasting from Knoxville, adding even more attention to an already massive matchup.
The atmosphere could be especially important for Manning, who has never played at Neyland Stadium.
The First Big SEC Test
For Tennessee, this is an opportunity to show that its undefeated start was more than just a product of its early schedule.
For Texas, it’s a chance to prove that the Longhorns can win on the road against a ranked SEC opponent after dominating the spotlight against Ohio State.
With two undefeated teams, two highly discussed quarterbacks and one of the loudest stadiums in college football, Saturday’s matchup has all the ingredients of a classic SEC showdown.
The Longhorns enter as the No. 1 team in the country. The Volunteers will have the home crowd behind them.
