After a disappointing 2025 campaign, the South Carolina Gamecocks are ready for a fresh start.
South Carolina opens the 2026 season Saturday against Kent State at Williams-Brice Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 12:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
At the center of the Gamecocks’ hopes is quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who returns to lead the offense and enters the season with plenty to prove.
A Chance to Reset
Last season was one South Carolina would like to forget.
The Gamecocks finished just 4-8 in 2025 after entering the year with much higher expectations. Now, Shane Beamer and his team have an opportunity to put that disappointing season behind them and start over.
The schedule gives South Carolina a chance to build confidence early. The Gamecocks begin with three consecutive home games, starting with Kent State, followed by Towson and then their SEC opener against Mississippi State.
A strong start could be exactly what this program needs.
Sellers Is the Key
There may not be a more important player on the roster than Sellers.
The quarterback has the physical ability and athleticism to become one of the SEC’s top players. After experiencing the highs and lows of the 2025 season, Sellers now gets another opportunity to establish himself as one of college football’s premier quarterbacks.
Saturday will be the first chance for fans to see what Sellers looks like in the new offensive system under offensive coordinator Kendal Briles.
The expectation is for the offense to become more explosive and give Sellers opportunities to use both his arm and his legs.
A New-Look Offense
South Carolina knows it has to improve offensively if it wants to make a serious jump in the SEC.
Briles takes over the offense hoping to create more consistency and take advantage of the talent surrounding Sellers. The Gamecocks have also added new pieces to the roster as they attempt to fix some of the issues that plagued them last season.
The offensive line will be especially important. If South Carolina can keep Sellers upright and establish the running game, the Gamecocks could become a much more dangerous offense.
The Defense Still Has Plenty of Talent
While much of the attention will be on Sellers, South Carolina’s defense could be just as important.
The Gamecocks have talented players returning on that side of the ball, including edge rusher Dylan Stewart, who is viewed as one of the top defensive prospects in the country.
A strong defense could take pressure off Sellers while the new offense finds its rhythm.
Tomorrow’s Opener
Kent State presents South Carolina with an opportunity to start the season exactly how it needs to.
The Gamecocks are heavy favorites, and ESPN’s matchup predictor gives South Carolina a 98.1% chance of winning.
But this game is about more than simply getting a win.
South Carolina needs to look different.
It needs to look confident.
And most importantly, it needs to show that last year’s 4-8 season was a setback rather than the beginning of a downward trend.
With Sellers back under center, a new offensive system and plenty of talent on both sides of the football, the Gamecocks have the opportunity to turn the page.
