Bryson DeChambeau found himself at the center of one of the biggest talking points of The Open Championship on Saturday after being assessed a two-stroke penalty for violating the Rules of Golf, a ruling that sparked debate throughout Royal Birkdale.

The penalty stemmed from an incident in which DeChambeau’s ball moved after he addressed it. Tournament officials later reviewed the play and determined the movement resulted in a breach of the rules, adding two strokes to his score. The decision dropped him further down the leaderboard and effectively ended any realistic hopes of making a late charge.

While some players questioned whether the punishment fit the situation, Rory McIlroy had little doubt the officials reached the correct conclusion.

McIlroy called the ruling “pretty obvious,” saying the available video evidence made the decision straightforward under the Rules of Golf. His comments contrasted with those of Max Homa, who defended DeChambeau’s character rather than disputing the rule itself.

Homa emphasized that DeChambeau “would never cheat,” arguing the incident was clearly unintentional and should not be viewed as an attempt to gain an unfair advantage. His remarks reflected the respect many players have for DeChambeau despite the controversy surrounding the ruling.

The incident once again highlighted one of golf’s unique characteristics: intent and the rulebook are not always the same thing. A player can receive a penalty even without trying to improve their position, and officials are expected to apply the rules consistently regardless of the circumstances.

For DeChambeau, the ruling became one of the defining moments of his championship. For McIlroy, it was simply a matter of enforcing the game’s standards, while Homa reminded fans that penalties do not automatically call a player’s integrity into question.

As The Open heads toward its conclusion, the debate is likely to continue, but the ruling itself appears settled: DeChambeau was penalized under the Rules of Golf, and one of the game’s biggest stars believes the officials got it right.
