Justin Tucker is officially getting another opportunity in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs are signing the veteran kicker to their practice squad, bringing one of the most accomplished kickers in league history back into the spotlight.

The move comes as Kansas City looks for answers at kicker following Harrison Butker’s recent struggles. Butker has missed multiple field goals this season, including two in the Chiefs’ 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Tucker’s arrival provides competition at a position that has become a growing concern for the defending contenders.

Tucker has not appeared in an NFL game since the 2024 season, making his return one of the more surprising developments of the week.

A Chance to Revive His Career

Tucker spent 13 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, establishing himself as one of the most reliable kickers in football. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections and five first-team All-Pro honors while helping Baltimore win Super Bowl XLVII.

He also owns the NFL record for the longest successful field goal, connecting from 66 yards against the Detroit Lions in 2021.

However, Tucker’s final season in Baltimore was difficult. He converted just 73.3% of his field-goal attempts in 2024, the worst mark of his career at the time. The Ravens released him in May 2025 after allegations emerged. Tucker has denied the allegations.

The NFL subsequently suspended Tucker for the first 10 games of the 2025 season for violating its personal conduct policy. He served the suspension as a free agent.

What This Means for Kansas City

The Chiefs are hoping Tucker can provide stability at a position where missed kicks have cost them valuable points. Although he must prove he can still perform at a high level, his career résumé makes him an intriguing option.

Head coach Andy Reid has indicated that Butker remains part of the team’s plans for now, meaning Tucker’s signing does not guarantee an immediate starting opportunity.

Still, the competition could give Kansas City an important alternative if Butker’s struggles continue.

For Tucker, the opportunity represents a chance to return to football after more than a year away. Whether he eventually earns a spot on the active roster remains uncertain, but his NFL comeback has officially begun.
