Michael “Venom” Page’s UFC future has suddenly become one of the biggest questions coming out of UFC Paris.
MVP picked up a unanimous decision victory over Nursulton Ruziboev on Saturday, improving his UFC record to 5-1. However, the victory also marked the end of his current UFC contract, leaving the 39-year old fighter’s future with the promotion uncertain.
MVP Gets the Win, But Not the Performance He Wanted
Page got the job done against Ruziboev, winning 29-28 on all three judges’ scorecards.
However, the fight wasn’t the type of performance fans have come to expect from MVP.
Known for his flashy striking, unpredictable movement and spectacular knockouts, Page and Ruziboev struggled to create much action throughout the fight. The Paris crowd became increasingly frustrated as the fight went on, with Page ultimately winning a relatively low-volume decision.
That could be important when the UFC decides what comes next.
His Contract Is Now Over
The biggest storyline isn’t necessarily the victory.
It’s what happens next.
Page entered UFC Paris fighting the final bout of his UFC contract. Following the event, reports indicated that he had been removed from the UFC rankings, a move that could signal that the promotion is preparing to let him test free agency.
MVP has made it clear that he would like to continue fighting at the highest level, but he also acknowledged that his recent performances haven’t always delivered the excitement fans expect from him.
Page himself admitted that he needs to take more risks and give fans more action inside the Octagon.
What Happens to MVP Now?
The UFC still has plenty of reasons to keep Page around.
He’s a recognizable name, has a massive highlight reel from his Bellator days and has won four straight UFC fights. His only UFC loss came against Ian Machado Garry, while he has defeated notable names including Kevin Holland, Shara Magomedov and Jared Cannonier.
But at 39 years old, the UFC may have to decide whether Page’s star power outweighs the lack of finishes during his UFC run.
That’s what makes the situation so fascinating.
MVP won his final fight under contract, but instead of leaving UFC Paris with his future secured, he walked out with more questions than answers.
