Los Angeles Moves On From Former First-Round Pick

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially waived Dalton Knecht, ending the young forward’s time with the franchise just days before the start of the 2026-27 NBA regular season. The decision was announced Monday, October 19, as the Lakers worked to finalize their roster ahead of the league’s deadline.

Knecht, selected with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, entered the league with plenty of excitement after an outstanding college career at Tennessee. However, after showing significant scoring potential as a rookie, he struggled to maintain a consistent role in Los Angeles.

The move represents a disappointing ending for a player who once appeared capable of becoming an important piece of the Lakers’ future.

Knecht’s Rise and Fall in Los Angeles

Knecht made an immediate impression during his rookie season, averaging 9.1 points and 2.8 rebounds across 78 games. He also delivered one of the most memorable performances of his young career against the Utah Jazz in November 2024, scoring 37 points and knocking down nine three-pointers.

That performance gave Lakers fans reason to believe the organization had found a valuable scorer late in the first round.

Unfortunately, Knecht’s production declined during his second season. He averaged just 4.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in 54 appearances, while playing approximately 10 minutes per game.

His opportunities became increasingly limited as the Lakers reshaped their roster and adjusted their offensive approach.

The Roster Crunch Played a Major Role

Los Angeles entered training camp with more players on guaranteed contracts than it could keep on its regular-season roster. The organization ultimately had to make a difficult decision to reach the NBA’s 15 player limit.

The Lakers reportedly explored trade possibilities involving Knecht, but they were unable to complete a deal that satisfied their needs.

With the deadline approaching, the franchise decided to waive the former first-round selection instead of moving forward with him on the roster.

What Comes Next for Knecht?

At just 25 years old, Knecht still has an opportunity to continue his NBA career elsewhere. His shooting ability and scoring potential could attract interest from teams searching for additional perimeter offense.

A fresh start could give him the opportunity to rebuild his confidence, earn consistent minutes and rediscover the form that made him such an exciting prospect at Tennessee.

For the Lakers, the decision reflects their focus on building a roster capable of competing immediately. For Knecht, it marks the beginning of an uncertain but potentially important new chapter.

The talent that made him a first round pick has not disappeared. Now, he must find the right situation to prove he can still become a productive NBA player.
