Atlanta Makes a Change at Quarterback
The Atlanta Falcons are adding another experienced quarterback to their roster, signing veteran Andy Dalton on Monday, October 19, while releasing Cooper Rush in a corresponding move. The signing gives Atlanta another option at quarterback as the team looks to navigate the remainder of the 2026 NFL season.
Dalton, who is entering his 16th NFL season, joins a quarterback room led by Michael Penix Jr., with Tua Tagovailoa also available as a backup. Dalton is expected to compete for a backup role and provide additional insurance at one of the most important positions on the field.
The move comes after Atlanta suffered a 31-23 loss to the Chicago Bears, dropping the Falcons to 2-4 on the season. With injuries already creating challenges at quarterback this year, the organization is making sure it has another experienced player ready if needed.
Dalton Brings Years of NFL Experience
Dalton entered the NFL in 2011 after being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the draft. He spent nine seasons in Cincinnati, earning three Pro Bowl selections and establishing himself as a reliable starting quarterback.
Throughout his career, Dalton has also played for the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles.
He has recorded nearly 40,000 passing yards and 254 touchdown passes during his NFL career. His experience across multiple offenses could help Atlanta maintain stability if its quarterback depth is tested again.
Dalton began the 2026 season with Philadelphia after being acquired from Carolina in March. However, the Eagles released him on October 9 after he appeared in one game and threw an interception on his only pass attempt.
Now, he gets another opportunity with Atlanta.
Cooper Rush Released as Falcons Adjust
To make room for Dalton, the Falcons released Rush, who started the team’s first two games while Penix and Tagovailoa dealt with injuries.
Rush completed 22 of 39 passes for 229 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in those starts. Atlanta lost both games before Penix returned to the lineup.
The Falcons are hoping Dalton’s experience provides another layer of protection behind their starting quarterback.
What Dalton’s Arrival Means for Atlanta
Dalton is not expected to immediately replace Penix as the starter. Instead, his arrival gives Atlanta a veteran option who has handled starting responsibilities throughout his career.
For a Falcons team trying to get back into contention, quarterback depth could become especially important as the season progresses. Dalton now has a chance to contribute in a new environment and potentially play a meaningful role if Atlanta needs him.
