James Madison Takes the Next Step in Its Athletic Rise
James Madison University is making a major move in college athletics. The Dukes officially accepted an invitation to join the American Conference on Monday, October 12, marking another major step forward for a program that has quickly established itself as a rising force in college football.
JMU will become a full member of the American no later than July 1, 2028, ending its time in the Sun Belt Conference, where the Dukes have competed since 2022. The move was approved unanimously by the American Conference’s board of directors following a formal application from the university.
The decision represents a significant opportunity for JMU to expand its national profile, increase its media exposure and compete against a new group of opponents across multiple sports.
Football Success Helped Lead the Way
JMU’s rise in football has been one of the biggest reasons the program has attracted national attention. The Dukes transitioned from the FCS level to the FBS in 2022 and quickly proved they could compete against established programs.
The program’s progress reached another milestone with its appearance in the 2025 College Football Playoff. That achievement helped demonstrate the potential of JMU football and strengthened the university’s position as it pursued a move to a different conference.
Joining the American will put the Dukes alongside programs such as Memphis, Tulane, East Carolina, South Florida and UTSA. The conference also includes Army and Navy as football members.
The move could create new opportunities for JMU to build its schedule, attract television audiences and strengthen its position in the College Football Playoff race.
More Than Just a Football Move
The transition will affect nearly the entire athletic department. Seventeen of JMU’s 18 varsity sports will compete in the American Conference, while field hockey will remain in the Mid-American Conference.
University leaders also pointed to financial opportunities, alumni connections and academic alignment as important factors in the decision. JMU expects the move to improve its athletic revenue potential and expand its reach into major markets.
What Comes Next for the Dukes?
Although the transition is not scheduled to be completed until 2028, the announcement gives JMU a clear direction for the future. The Dukes will have time to continue building their programs before entering their new conference.
JMU’s departure also represents a significant change for the Sun Belt, which will lose one of its most successful recent additions.
The Dukes are moving up once again, and their jump to the American Conference could be the next major step in JMU’s growing national reputation.
