UCLA Is No Longer a Team Opponents Can Overlook
For years, UCLA football has been searching for a way to return to national relevance. Now, the Bruins are giving college football fans a reason to pay attention. After starting the 2026 season 5-0 and earning a massive 17-15 road victory over Oregon, UCLA is proving that it could be one of the biggest surprises in college football.
Under head coach Bob Chesney, the Bruins have completely changed the conversation surrounding their program. UCLA entered its matchup against Oregon as the No. 21 team in the country, facing a Ducks squad ranked No. 13. Instead of backing down in one of the toughest environments in college football, the Bruins delivered a defensive performance that helped secure their biggest win of the season.
The victory also pushed UCLA to No. 12 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, giving the program even more national attention.
Defense Is Leading the Way
One of the biggest reasons to believe in UCLA is its defense. Against Oregon, the Bruins consistently made life difficult for the Ducks, holding them to just six points through the first three quarters before surviving a late push.
UCLA forced seven takeaways, including five fumble recoveries, showing its ability to create game-changing plays. The Bruins also limited Oregon to just one successful conversion on 12 third-down attempts.
Those numbers are difficult to ignore. Strong defenses can keep teams competitive even when the offense struggles, and UCLA demonstrated exactly that in Eugene.
Can the Bruins Keep Winning?
The biggest question surrounding UCLA is whether it can maintain this level of play against the rest of its Big Ten schedule.
Quarterback Nico Iamaleava left the Oregon game with a leg injury after committing three turnovers in the first half. Backup Ty Dieffenbach stepped in and connected with Wayne Knight for the go-ahead touchdown, demonstrating the team’s ability to respond when things go wrong.
Knight has also become a major weapon, contributing both as a runner and receiver. His versatility gives UCLA another way to move the ball while the defense continues to make life difficult for opponents.
The Verdict: UCLA Is Legit
UCLA has earned the right to be taken seriously. An undefeated record, a top-15 ranking and a road victory over a ranked Oregon team are meaningful accomplishments.
The Bruins still have plenty to prove before they can be considered national championship contenders. However, Chesney has UCLA playing confident, physical football, and the team’s defense gives it a chance against quality opponents.
UCLA’s next matchup against Wisconsin on October 17 will provide another opportunity to build momentum.
The Bruins might not be ready to take over college football just yet, but one thing is becoming clear: UCLA is no longer an easy win, and this undefeated start is no fluke.
