The SEC keeps claiming to be college football’s toughest conference, but embarrassing losses and falling rankings are exposing a different reality.

For years, SEC fans have preached the same message: It just means more. But after another chaotic weekend of college football, maybe it’s time to ask a question that SEC fans aren’t going to like. Is the SEC actually that good anymore?

Georgia entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the country before suffering an embarrassing 27-24 home loss to unranked Auburn. Alabama fell seven spots to No. 13 after losing to Tennessee, while Texas dropped all the way to No. 19 following its second consecutive defeat.

Remember when Alabama, Georgia and Texas were supposed to be three of the best teams in America? Now, all three have serious questions surrounding their championship potential.

Meanwhile, Miami, BYU, Ohio State and Notre Dame occupy the top four spots in the latest AP Poll. The SEC doesn’t have a single team ranked inside the top four, something that would’ve seemed unthinkable during the conference’s dominant years.

And here’s what SEC fans really don’t want to hear: Maybe beating each other every Saturday doesn’t automatically make your conference the best in America.

The Big Ten has legitimate championship contenders, the Big 12 has three undefeated teams ranked inside the top 10, and Miami is sitting at No. 1 representing the ACC.

Sure, the SEC still has tremendous talent and plenty of teams capable of winning a national championship. But the days of automatically crowning the conference as college football’s unquestioned king might be coming to an end.

At some point, reputation has to stop outweighing results.

The SEC spent years telling everyone it was different. Now the rest of college football might finally be catching up.
