The University of Georgia baseball team may have stumbled into one of the most unexpected good-luck charms in college sports this season.
Earlier this year, while traveling to Starkville, Mississippi, the Bulldogs made a stop at Buc-ee’s. Somewhere between the brisket sandwiches and oversized gas station souvenirs, players picked up Sour Power candy belts. Before long, the colorful candy became a dugout staple and a team tradition.
The “Sour Power Belt” quickly caught on with fans. Georgia kept winning, the candy kept appearing, and suddenly a simple road-trip snack became part of the program’s postseason identity.
Honestly, it’s a fun story. College sports thrive on quirky traditions, and this one is harmless enough. If a few pieces of sour candy help fuel a trip to Omaha, who is anybody to argue?
But somewhere along the way, things got a little weird.
As Georgia’s postseason run has continued, some fans have taken the tradition far beyond what was ever intended. Every time the Bulldogs face adversity, social media fills with photos of grown men draped head to toe in candy belts. Some have even posted pictures of themselves praying to the candy.
Let’s all take a moment here.
The candy didn’t hit a home run against Oklahoma. The candy didn’t strike out hitters. The candy isn’t calling pitches or making defensive plays. It’s candy.
College baseball fans are supposed to be passionate. That’s part of what makes Omaha special. But when adults are constructing makeshift candy shrines and begging fruit-flavored sugar strips to save a baseball game, we’ve officially crossed into Texas A&M territory.
And nobody wants that.
The Sour Power Belt is a fun tradition. It’s a great story. It’s become part of Georgia’s postseason identity. But maybe let’s keep it in the dugout and out of the prayer circle.
Regardless of how many candy belts appear on social media, Georgia has bigger things to worry about Tuesday night. The Bulldogs face Oklahoma once again in Omaha with a chance to continue their remarkable postseason run.
So buckle up. The stakes are high, the atmosphere will be electric, and somewhere in the crowd, there’s probably a fully grown adult wearing enough Sour Power candy to stock an entire Buc-ee’s aisle.
At least try to save some for the players.
