The Miami Hurricanes couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2026 season.
No. 7 Miami dominated Stanford 45-6 on Friday night, but the biggest story wasn’t just the lopsided score. It was the incredible connection between quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Malachi Toney.
The two newcomers and returning star wasted no time showing that Miami could have one of the most dangerous passing attacks in college football.
Mensah Has a Dream Debut
Mensah couldn’t have scripted his Miami debut much better.
The former Duke quarterback completed 27 of 30 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns, finishing the night with a remarkable 90% completion rate. He also threw no interceptions.
Mensah immediately looked comfortable in Miami’s offense, making accurate throws all over the field and consistently finding open receivers.
But one receiver stood out above everyone else.
Toney Was Simply Unstoppable
Malachi Toney put together one of the greatest receiving performances in Miami history.
The sophomore caught 12 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns, breaking Miami’s single-game receiving yardage record that had stood for decades.
Toney was nearly impossible for Stanford to cover.
He scored twice in the first quarter before adding another explosive touchdown later in the game. His chemistry with Mensah was obvious from the opening drive, when the two connected on a 48-yard completion.
After a historic freshman season, Toney wasted no time making an even bigger statement.
Could This Be a Heisman Duo?
It’s obviously way too early to start handing out awards, but both players have immediately put themselves into the conversation.
Toney entered the season with Heisman expectations after catching 109 passes for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman.
Mensah, meanwhile, has the opportunity to establish himself as one of the nation’s top quarterbacks after his incredible debut.
If these two continue playing anywhere close to this level, Miami could have two legitimate Heisman candidates on the same offense.
Miami Looks Dangerous
The Hurricanes entered 2026 with College Football Playoff expectations.
After Friday night, those expectations don’t look unreasonable.
Miami showed explosive ability through the air, dominated Stanford and looked like a team capable of making another deep postseason run.
And the scariest part?
Mensah and Toney might only be getting started.
If Friday night’s performance is any indication, Miami has found a quarterback-receiver combination that could terrorize the ACC and potentially the entire country.
Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney didn’t just have great games. They announced themselves as one of college football’s most dangerous duos.
