The Alabama Crimson Tide opened the 2026 season exactly how they wanted.
No. 13 Alabama dominated East Carolina on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 48-10 victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium and immediately putting the rest of the SEC on notice. The Crimson Tide controlled the game on both sides of the football and never allowed the Pirates to seriously threaten the outcome.
For Kalen DeBoer and Alabama, it was an encouraging start to a season filled with enormous expectations.
Keelon Russell Shows His Potential
All eyes were on quarterback Keelon Russell entering his first season as Alabama’s starter.
The sophomore showed plenty of promise in his debut, throwing for 249 yards while adding 86 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. He consistently kept the offense moving with both his arm and his legs.
There were a few moments where Russell tried to make plays that weren’t necessarily there, but overall, his first start was an impressive one.
More importantly, Alabama showed it can build an offense around Russell’s ability to make plays outside the pocket.
The Running Game Makes a Statement
One of the biggest questions surrounding Alabama entering the season was whether the running game would improve.
The answer on Saturday was a resounding yes.
Daniel Hill scored twice on the ground, while EJ Crowell added another touchdown. Alabama’s offensive line consistently created running lanes and allowed the Crimson Tide to control the game on the ground.
After struggling to run the football late last season, Alabama’s performance Saturday was exactly what the coaching staff wanted to see.
The Defense Makes Plays
The Crimson Tide defense also delivered.
Alabama held East Carolina to just 162 total yards and forced a pair of turnovers. The biggest play came from Yhonzae Pierre, who intercepted Mitch Griffis and returned it for a touchdown.
That defensive score helped Alabama turn a competitive game into a rout.
The Crimson Tide still allowed a few explosive plays, including East Carolina’s touchdown in the second quarter, but overall the defense looked fast and physical.
Ryan Coleman-Williams Breaks Out
One of the biggest surprises of the afternoon was wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams.
After a couple of early drops, Coleman-Williams bounced back in a huge way, finishing with five receptions for 130 yards.
His big-play ability gives Russell another dangerous weapon in the passing game and could become extremely important as Alabama’s schedule gets tougher.
Alabama Sends an Early Message
It was only one game, but Alabama accomplished almost everything it wanted.
The Crimson Tide ran the ball effectively, got an impressive debut from Russell, created turnovers and dominated the line of scrimmage.
There are still things to clean up, particularly some penalties and missed opportunities, but the overall performance was encouraging.
Now the real test begins.
Alabama has officially entered the Keelon Russell era, and after a dominant season-opening victory, the Crimson Tide look ready to make another run at the top of the SEC.
