Dak Prescott officially made Dallas Cowboys history Sunday afternoon.
During the Cowboys’ 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders, Prescott threw his 249th career touchdown pass, surpassing Tony Romo for the most touchdown passes in franchise history. The record-breaking throw came in the fourth quarter when Prescott connected with CeeDee Lamb for a 24-yard touchdown.
Prescott entered the game needing just four touchdown passes to take sole possession of the record. He delivered exactly that, throwing two touchdowns to Lamb and two to tight end Jake Ferguson.
The performance was impressive from start to finish. Prescott completed 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns, helping Dallas pull away from Washington in the second half. Lamb was his biggest weapon, finishing with eight catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns.
The record carries extra significance because Romo held the mark for nearly a decade. Romo finished his Cowboys career with 248 touchdown passes from 2006 through 2016. Prescott eventually took over as Dallas’ starting quarterback in 2016 after Romo suffered a preseason injury.
Now, Prescott owns the franchise record.
The 249 touchdown passes are only the latest major passing record Prescott has claimed in Dallas. He has also moved into first place in franchise history in passing yards, completions and attempts.
Prescott’s record-breaking moment also came at home, making the achievement even more memorable for the Cowboys quarterback. After the touchdown, Prescott celebrated with his teammates as the AT&T Stadium crowd recognized a major moment in franchise history.
For Prescott, though, the record was about more than statistics. He spoke afterward about feeling the presence of his late mother, Peggy, during the record-setting moment and hearing how proud she would be of him.
Ten years after becoming the Cowboys’ starting quarterback, Dak Prescott is now officially the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown passes.
No. 4 has officially passed No. 9 in the Cowboys record books.
