The Carolina Panthers will return home Sunday afternoon looking to continue their recent success when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a crucial NFC South matchup. With the regular season approaching its halfway point, the Panthers have an opportunity to strengthen their position in the division, while Tampa Bay desperately needs a victory to keep its season from slipping further away.
Carolina enters Week 7 with a 3-2 record after earning an impressive 25-14 road victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Panthers have won two straight games and are beginning to show significant improvement on both sides of the football. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, sits at 1-5 following a heartbreaking 26-19 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers after surrendering a 13 point fourth quarter lead.
The divisional rivalry adds another layer of importance to Sunday’s game. A Panthers victory would help Carolina maintain its lead in the NFC South, while a Buccaneers win could give Tampa Bay a much-needed boost and help the team get back into the division race.
Bryce Young leads Carolina’s offense
Quarterback Bryce Young has taken a major step forward this season and will be the central figure in Carolina’s attempt to earn another victory. Young has emerged as one of the league’s most productive passers, helping the Panthers build one of the NFL’s strongest passing attacks.
His ability to distribute the football and make plays under pressure has transformed Carolina’s offense. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan has become an important target, providing Young with a reliable option capable of making plays downfield. Jalen Coker also gives the Panthers another weapon in the passing game.
Running back Chuba Hubbard will be equally important. His ability to produce on the ground can keep Tampa Bay’s defense honest and prevent the Buccaneers from concentrating entirely on stopping Young through the air.
Head coach Dave Canales and offensive coordinator Brad Idzik have helped Carolina become more creative offensively. If the Panthers can maintain that balance, they will have a strong opportunity to exploit Tampa Bay’s weaknesses.
Tampa Bay needs a complete performance
The Buccaneers will enter Sunday’s game with renewed hope as quarterback Baker Mayfield is set to return after missing three games with a dislocated right thumb. His return could provide a major boost to an offense that has struggled to produce consistently during his absence.

Mayfield will have to adjust to playing with a protective glove on his throwing hand, making his performance one of the biggest storylines of the afternoon. Running back Bucky Irving will also be important, particularly against a Carolina defense that has struggled to stop the run.
However, Tampa Bay will be without wide receiver Emeka Egbuka and offensive tackle Luke Goedeke. Those absences could make it more difficult for Mayfield to find his rhythm and handle Carolina’s defensive pressure.

Head coach Todd Bowles will also need his defense to finish the game. The Buccaneers played well for much of their loss to Pittsburgh before allowing the Steelers to take control late. Against a productive Carolina offense, Tampa Bay cannot afford another late collapse.
