I really don’t understand Bryce Underwood’s response here.
After Michigan barely escaped Western Michigan 13-12, head coach Kyle Whittingham made it clear that Underwood’s starting job isn’t guaranteed forever.
And why should it be?
Underwood completed just 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards, threw an interception and lost a fumble. Michigan needed a controversial extra second and Hail Mary just to avoid one of the most embarrassing losses in program history.
Whittingham basically challenged his quarterback to improve.
When Underwood was asked about those comments, his response was:
“There were comments about that? That’s cool. I didn’t see that. It’s cool.”
Come on.
You’re the quarterback at Michigan.
Your head coach just publicly said your job isn’t set in stone after you struggled against Western Michigan. Maybe acting completely unbothered isn’t the message you want to send.
Underwood is still only a sophomore, and nobody should expect him to handle everything perfectly.
But this is also Year 2.
He threw only 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions last season, and Michigan entered 2026 expecting a major jump. Instead, his first performance created enough concern that Whittingham publicly discussed his job security.
At some point, the enormous recruiting hype doesn’t matter anymore.
You have to produce.
And with No. 10 Oklahoma coming to the Big House this weekend, Underwood is about to get an opportunity to shut everybody up.
But right now?
Less “that’s cool.” More proving you’re actually Michigan’s quarterback.
