Denver Completes Fourth Quarter Comeback
The Denver Broncos delivered a clutch fourth quarter performance Sunday, rallying past the Los Angeles Chargers for a 23-17 victory at SoFi Stadium. Denver scored 13 unanswered points in the final quarter, turning a seven point deficit into a crucial AFC West win.
The victory improved the Broncos to 3-2 and gave them their first division win of the season. The Chargers, meanwhile, fell to 0-5 after another difficult finish, as costly mistakes prevented them from securing their first victory of the year.
Broncos Control the First Half
Denver established control early behind running back J.K. Dobbins, who scored on a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Broncos added a 34 yard field goal from Wil Lutz in the second quarter to take a 10-3 lead into halftime.
The Chargers struggled to find their rhythm during the opening half, managing only a field goal before the break. Denver’s defense kept quarterback Justin Herbert under pressure and limited Los Angeles’ opportunities to produce explosive plays.
Chargers Take Control After Halftime
Los Angeles came out of the locker room with renewed energy. Herbert led a lengthy touchdown drive that ended with a seven yard touchdown pass to Hayden Rucci, tying the game at 10.
The Chargers then took their first lead when running back Kimani Vidal broke free for a 42-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. The explosive play put Los Angeles ahead 17-10 and gave the home team momentum heading into the final period.
However, Denver refused to go away.
Denver Defense Changes the Game
The Broncos responded early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Bo Nix connected with Courtland Sutton for a five-yard touchdown, tying the score at 17.
Denver’s defense then took over. Herbert lost a fumble, giving the Broncos another opportunity to move ahead. Lutz capitalized by drilling a 19-yard field goal with 5:07 remaining, putting Denver in front 20-17.
Herbert threw an interception on the Chargers’ next possession, handing Denver another chance to add to its lead. Lutz converted a 36-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining, extending the advantage to 23-17.
Broncos Build Momentum
Nix finished 16 of 27 passing for 123 yards and a touchdown, while Dobbins recorded 68 rushing yards and a score. Denver’s defense forced two fourth-quarter turnovers that proved decisive.
Herbert finished with 121 passing yards as the Chargers struggled to sustain their offense late in the game.
The Broncos now have a significant divisional victory to build on as they prepare for their next matchup. For Los Angeles, the 0-5 start continues to raise questions about whether the team can find a way to finish games.
