Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables has agreed to a new six year contract that will keep him in Norman through 2032, the university announced Thursday. The agreement adds two years to his previous contract and is pending approval by the Oklahoma Board of Regents.

The extension comes after Venables guided Oklahoma to a 10-3 record in 2025 and its first College Football Playoff appearance since 2019. The Sooners earned a No. 8 seed and hosted a first-round playoff game before falling to Alabama. Oklahoma also finished 6-2 in SEC regular season play, a significant improvement from its 2-6 conference record in 2024.

Venables has also continued to make his mark as a defensive minded coach. Oklahoma’s defense ranked among the nation’s best last season, finishing sixth nationally in yards allowed per game and seventh in scoring defense. The Sooners also led the country in tackles for loss and sacks per game.

According to ESPN, the new contract is expected to average more than $10.5 million per season, putting Venables among the highest-paid coaches in college football.

Oklahoma athletic director Roger Denny said the extension provides stability and continuity as the Sooners pursue championships. With Oklahoma entering the 2026 season ranked No. 10 in the AP preseason poll, expectations are high for Venables and his program. The new deal signals that the Sooners believe Venables is the coach capable of taking Oklahoma to the next level in the SEC.
