Terrell Out, Penix In

The Atlanta Falcons face a nightmare scenario just days before Thursday Night Football. Star cornerback A.J. Terrell has landed on injured reserve due to a groin injury sustained in Week 2. This move shuts him down for a minimum of four games, leaving a massive hole in the secondary right when the team needs him most. The defense already allowed 54 points in the first two weeks, and now their best playmaker is gone.

Michael Penix Jr. returns to the lineup to try and right the ship, but the odds are stacked against him. The team is sitting on a precarious 0-2 record, and a loss to Green Bay would put them in an 0-3 hole. The schedule only gets tougher after this game, so the margin for error is nonexistent. Penix knows the stakes are high as he prepares to face a Packers offense that is looking to bounce back.

The Injury Report and Roster Moves

According to The Falcoholic, the Falcons held their first actual practice of the week with mixed results for the injury report. The biggest news came when the team officially placed Terrell on injured reserve. It is currently unclear how severe the groin issue really is, but the team decided to shut him down immediately. This decision follows his absence from most of Week 2 against the Panthers.

To fill the void, the Falcons signed defensive lineman Zach Harrison off the practice squad in a corresponding transaction. Harrison was a surprise cut at the 53-man roster deadline but returns to the active roster for this crucial matchup. Now that Samson Ebukam is also dealing with a hamstring injury, he was elevated from the practice squad in Week 2 and should play an even bigger role. On Tuesday, Ebukam remains the lone player absent from practice.

Penix addressed the critics who questioned his health during the first two weeks of the season. He made his stance clear regarding his willingness to play through minor issues.

The Packers are not without their own injury concerns heading into the home opener. Their offensive line is a major talking point after Zach Bako-Bewele suffered a season-ending injury. Three other Packers offensive linemen are on the injury report, including Javon Hargrave with a knee and concussion issue. The team held a walkthrough on Tuesday rather than a full practice, which adds to the uncertainty for their offensive unit.

Can the Defense Survive Without Terrell?

The loss of A.J. Terrell changes the entire dynamic of the Falcons defense. They have already surrendered 54 points, and while the box score looks terrible, the defense has not been as bad as the numbers suggest. Most of those points came on short fields following turnovers. On non-short fields, they have only allowed 23 points in two games. However, without Terrell, that margin for error disappears instantly.

Although Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love has usually shredded the blitz, the Falcons are third in pressure rate so far. They rank 31st in blitz rate, meaning they are getting pressure without sending extra defenders. With three sacks, Former Packer Za’Darius Smith leads, while Gervon Dexter has eight pressures from the interior. Samson Ebukam has also contributed eight pressures, but his hamstring injury adds another layer of risk.

Love faces a different kind of test compared to his games against the Vikings and Jets. The offensive line struggles could expose him if the Falcons can generate pressure with their front four. The Packers offense has been disjointed coming off a bad performance, and they need to protect their quarterback better than they did against the Jets. If the line cannot hold up, Love will face a chaotic game plan.

Thursday Night Football Awaits

The Falcons and Packers will face off in their home opener on Thursday Night Football. The game starts on Thursday night in Green Bay, and it serves as a critical test for both teams. While a loss puts them in a deep hole, a win could potentially turn the entire season around for Atlanta.
